U.S. Tourists Caught in Mexico Chaos After Notorious Cartel Leader Killed
A major security operation in Mexico has triggered a surge of violence that is now directly impacting American travelers.

Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguea Cervantes — widely considered Mexico’s most powerful and dangerous drug trafficker — was killed during a Mexican military raid targeting leadership of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
According to the White House, U.S. intelligence agencies assisted Mexican forces by providing strategic information ahead of the operation.
Violence Spreads Across Multiple States
The aftermath was swift and volatile.
Suspected cartel members launched retaliatory attacks, setting fire to buses, blocking highways, and targeting businesses in several regions. Mexican authorities reported more than 250 road blockades across at least 20 states. While officials say many of those blockades have now been removed, tensions remain high in several areas.
Security forces continue patrols as the government works to stabilize affected regions.
